AGRICULTURAL POTENTIALITIES
The State has a projected population of 3.5 million people. The 1991 national census puts the population of the state at 2,826,444, about 3.2 percent of Nigeria’s population, comprising 1,444,912 males and 1,418,095 females. Although a recent census was carried out in Nigeria in March 2006, the results had not been released at the time of this publication.

With a total land area of 49,359 square kilometers, the state could be said to have an average of 507 persons per square kilometer. The state is pluralistic in nature and is made up of many ethnic groups. The predominant ethnic groups are Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Gerawa, Sayawa, Jarawa, Bolawa, Kare-Kare, and Warjawa.2

Like all other ethnic groups in Nigeria, Bauchi state operates a strong form of social organization. These groups have cultural similarities and share similar social and occupational practice, festivals, naming ceremonies and a high degree of ethnic interaction especially in Marriage.

LANGUAGE
Although the major Languages spoken in Bauchi are Hausa, Bole, Fufulde, as English, which is the official language, there are over 60 other languages spoken as first languages in all the Local Government Areas of the state. Most others are very small and extremely endangered languages, due to the strong influence of Hausa. For example, Ajawa, Gamo-Ningi, Kubi and Mawa are said to be extinct, while Lere, Shau and Ziriya are threatened
